Former U.S. Senator Hank Brown Named to US West Board

(November 3, 1998)  Hank Brown, a U.S. Senator from Colorado until 1997, has been named to the Board of Directors of U S West, the telephone company which provides local phone service to most of the western United States, except California.

Brown is a former accountant and executive for Monfort, a giant cattle feedlot company.  He served in the Colorado state legislature in the 1970s.  He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1980 from a district comprised of the high plains of eastern Colorado.  He served in succession on the Interior, Budget, and Ways and Means Committees.  In 1990 he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served on the Judiciary, Budget, and Foreign Relations Committees.

Brown is a mild mannered, sometimes iconoclastic, conservative Republican who tends to oppose government intervention in the marketplace.  He has much in common with his former Senate colleagues, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) and Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT), who chair the Commerce Committee, and Communications Subcommittee, respectively.

Brown did not seek reelection in 1996.  He was briefly head of the University of Denver's Center for Public Policy.  He has been President of the University of Northern Colorado since July 1. UNC is located in Greeley, Colorado, just north of Denver.  It has a total enrollment of 10,670 mostly undergraduate students.
