STATEMENT BY U.S. SECRETARY OF EDUCATION RICHARD W. RILEY
Regarding FCC E-Rate Decision

The Federal Communications Commission's decision today to fully fund the E-Rate program at $2.25 billion is a very significant step toward preparing America's students for the future. As we've seen in the first year of the program alone, the E-Rate is making a real difference in our schools by providing needed resources that were previously not available or not affordable. Students and teachers are conducting research and gathering data from sources beyond their school and community, and scientists and other experts are participating in classroom projects from remote locations.

Technology is a new basic in today's classrooms and, used responsibly and with the guidance of parents and teachers, can enhance traditional classroom activities and strengthen teaching and learning.

The FCC's action makes clear that the program will go on to support thousands more schools and libraries across the country in the future. This is critically important in order to successfully prepare our students for the challenges of the 21st century.
